Abstract
Rogue Trader follows in the tradition of conventional opera in its form, structure and use of musical resources. The chorus for instance takes the role of the traders at SIMEX in Act 1, and then as the revelers at the Bar at Boat Quay in Act 3. They comment on the action - first the trading conditions at SIMEX and then after work, the entertainment and antics at the Bar.
Most of the narrative and the development of the plot are told in vocal recitative. There are few conventional song numbers or Arias; however there are some elements of this in the duet between the Leesons in Act 2.
The orchestra is used to draw reference to important textual moments or is used when dramatic interludes carry the action forward without voices, i.e. the dance sequences, the dream sequences, the meditative moments of Nick Leeson, and in the flight (escape) sequence.
