Abstract
One of the current trends in education is the use of computers for teaching and learning. Schools are equipped with the necessary physical and technological infrastructure and need technologically literate teachers with the right skills and competence to use technology effectively for instructional purposes. Students need to be empowered with the necessary IT knowledge to achieve important technology capacities in this new Information Age and the teacher has often been singled out as a key individual in helping the students achieve these capabilities.
New educational practices are urgently required to equip pre-service teachers with all the necessary IT knowledge and skills for providing students with learning opportunities in the use of IT. It is critical for teacher training institutions to provide an IT-enriched environment where training programmes are carefully implemented to prepare teacher trainees adequately for their teaching practices. To prepare teachers for the new technological age, the NIE (Singapore) introduced compulsory IT training in its Pre-Service Education Courses from 1999 onwards to equip teachers with the necessary IT skills to help them meet the demands of using IT for teaching and learning in the schools.
A survey was conducted for the 1999-2001 intake of pre-service education teacher training on IT use. The purpose of this study is to look specifically into the secondary school NIE graduates' perceptions of the IT training programmes and focuses on those variables where data were provided for analysis. From the findings, there was evidence that the IT training provided by NIE for the pre-service education teachers received good response. The level of perceived sense of self-confidence and satisfaction was high suggesting that the trainees feel competent in the use of IT from the training they have received.
