    Raja Ali Haji : suatu kajian mengenai pemikiran dan kepengarangannya = Raja Ali Haji : a study on his thoughts and authorship
    Raja Ali Haji, a member of the Riau royal house in the nineteenth century played a significant role with his contributions to the Malay literary traditions. Some of his works are Gurindam Dua Belas (1847), Bustanul Katibin (1851), Thamarat al- Muhimmah (1857), Salasilah Melayu Dan Bugis Dan Sekelian Rajanya (1861), Tuhfat al-Nafis (1866), Syair Sultan Muluk (1847), Syair Suluh Pegawai (1866) and Syair Siti Sianah (1866).

    Among the prominent works of Raja Ali Haji was Tuhfat al-Nafis, a historical work which was regarded as his magnum opus. The creation of Tuhfat al-Nafis was motivated by Raja Ali Haji’s sense of familial duty to preserve the history of his ancestors and as a precious gift to the generation thereafter. Other features of Tuhfat al-Nafis include Raja Ali Haji’s deviation from the traditional historiography with the inclusion of dates, an element which was absent in the traditional historical writings. This brought a new conception of time through Raja Ali Haji’s weltanschauung.

    This study examines five prominent works of Raja Ali Haji, namely Tuhfat al- Nafis, a historical prose and four traditional poetries, namely; Gurindam Dua Belas, Syair Suluh Pegawai, Syair Siti Sianah and Syair Sultan Abdul Muluk. Generally, the study attempts to analyze the thoughts and authorship manifested by Raja Ali Haji into his works. These works will be analyzed through textual and contextual analysis.

    Through this analysis, a few approaches are adopted. They are the historical approach and the moral criticism approach. Using these approaches, the study attempts to analyze how the emphasis on genealogy in Tuhfat al-Nafis can be synthesized into smaller ideas of ‘self’, which can evolve in ‘family’ and ‘society’ found in the other four texts. The distinctive features found in these texts will reflect Raja Ali Haji’s thoughts and authorship.

    The study is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the concept of author and authorship. Chapter 2 explores the Malay court literature which highlights its difference with Malay folk literature. Chapter 3 discusses the role of Raja Ali Haji as a writer during his period. This chapter explores the contextual aspects of his works and the influencing factors that determine his thoughts and his authorship.

    Chapter 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 discusses the thoughts and authorship of Raja Ali Haji through the five texts selected in this study. It explores the common elements found in the styles and ideas Raja Ali employed in his works.

    Chapter 9 is the concluding part that summarizes all findings in the previous chapters. These distinctive features found in all the texts used in this study review evidences and attempt to offer Raja Ali Haji’s thoughts and authorship and the writing styles he employed to manifest his ideas. It identifies that the emphasis on genealogy in Tuhfat al-Nafis is supported by synthesized ideas such as ‘self’, ‘family’ and ‘society’ which makes up the thesis in this study.

    Syair in the life of the contemporary Malays in Singapore
    (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (Malaysia), 2024) ;
    Syair, a form of traditional Malay poetry believed to have been adapted from the Persian or Arab civilization, has been a popular performative art in the Malay world, including Singapore. It has evolved since its first introduction to the Malay Archipelago with the coming of Islam, and what constitutes as syair today is a culmination of its language structure, aesthetics, and depth of author’s insights as a form of the Malay community’s creative art. Once prevalent amongst the Malays until the 1970s, syair has significantly declined in popularity with the emergence of modern poetry and printed prose, and modern-day forms of entertainment, among other things, though it is still familiar to the urban and contemporary Malays in Singapore. Based on the data collected from a research project (2018 to 2020) in Singapore, this paper demonstrates that syair in the form of rare hikayat (tales) texts and manuscripts are still kept as personal collection and family heirloom. Albeit dwindling in number, the art of syair recital is slowly eroding if not for individuals who perceive the preservation of syair texts and the art of syair recital as their honourable responsibility, akin to preserving the Malays’ social memory and collective wisdom.

    Pendidikan sastra Melayu di Singapura: Renungan terhadap sastera kanak-kanak dan remaja
    The power of the colonial government had brought about significant changes in Malay education system in Singapore Malay education was shaped in accordance with the needs and aspirations of the colonial, which placed its importance in the teaching of the Malay language. A bunch of texts translated fron Western literature had been used as reading materials in Malay vernacular schools. The teaching of Malay literature began to be given in Malay schools in Singapore in the 1960s. However, as these schools are closed down one by one, the teaching of Malay Iliterature will consequently be stopped. Literary works were only used in the teaching of the Malay language. In 2001, the Ministry of Education of Singapore introduced two special programs in lower and middle levels to conserve the teaching of Malay literature. These programs also serve as efforts to develop appreciation toward Malay language and culture among students. The efforts will have continuity if Elective Malay Literature is offered in high schools. This paper will discuss teaching materials in the education curriculum and the objective of the teaching of Malay literature in Singapore. Will certain selected materials in the teaching of literature bring targeted outcomes or not? The use of literary materials for children and teenagers will be discussed and several problems in selecting the materials will be diagnosed. Besides, the discourse of the literature for children and teenagers will be examined and valued in accordance with the context of present-day literature learning. The learning of Malay literature in middle level aims to give knowledge about the elements of literature and ideal values to students so that they can experience and develop respect for the Malay language, literature and social values. Through the literary materials and the teaching and learning activities, the students will be educated to think analytically, critically and creatively. Furthermore, it is expected that they can heighten their language ability and develop their sense of aesthetics if they read and analyze the Malay works of literature.

    Preserving Singapore-Johor-Riau literature
    (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Malaysia, 2014)
    A study of the connection between the literature of three areas (Singapore, Johor and Riau) was begun in 1987. The spirit and vision of these three areas was followed up with activities that accelerated the regional development of language, literature and culture. Dialog Selatan (Southern Dialogue) and meetings of scholars and intellectuals were among initiatives undertaken to reach a common goal towards preservation. What is the hope and aspiration behind these literary activities? This article explores initiatives taken and challenges faced by the three areas in preserving their literary ties throughout the 1990s. This article also introduces the efforts made to collect manuscripts and artifacts of Riau literature in Singapore, with the hope that it will open up ways for continued efforts towards the culture of research on materials in literature.

    History, memory and remembering: An exploration of cultural memory in the historiographical tradition of Malay poetry [Sejarah, ingatan dan kenangan: Penerokaan memori budaya dalam tradisi historiografi kepenyairan Melayu]
    (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Malaysia, 2017)
    This article discusses Malay poems, especially as reflected in the syair of the Riau region, which have been classified as history poems. Two syair, Syair Kisah Engku Puteri and Syair Sultan Mahmud di Lingga, which each concern characters from the royal court of Riau-Engku Puteri Raja Hamidah and Sultan Mahmud Muzaffar Syah-will be focused upon. Tales about these two characters also appear in the historiographical text Tuhfat al-Nafis. On the whole, history poems are about events such as wars, travels, deaths, and marriages, and concern particular historical figures with the aim that these events are recorded. Using the concept of cultural memory to explore the relationship between history poems and memory, this article shows that the writers of both syair use their individual memories in their works. This is done in order to retain and store a private remembrance, and transforming it to produce a collective remembrance while shaping the public view of a fragment of history not captured in Tuhfat al-Nafis.
