- PublicationRestrictedThe role of narrative messages and gender in social media users' behaviour(National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NIE NTU), Singapore, 2024)
;Mohammed Shaheer Mohammed YousoffThe main aim of this research study is to understand whether the effectiveness of a public service message in motivating one towards making appropriate changes to their social media use habits is influenced by the use of narrative or gender or a combination of both. Therefore, the 2 variables of this study are use of narrative and gender. A sample size of 160 young adults aged 21 years old and above participated in the study. This research study showed that narratives and gender in combination had an influence on whether the message had the potential to trigger change in the participants regarding their social media use habits. Specifically, female participants found narrative messages to be more persuasive in making appropriate changes to their social media use habits. However, the findings from this study showed that the manner in which messages are conceptualized and presented did not influence males to make appropriate changes to their social media use habits.25 44 - PublicationRestrictedGamification through Singapore student learning space applied in a Singapore primary school Chinese language teaching and learning context: A study of effectiveness and engagement(National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NIE NTU), Singapore, 2024)

;Pang, Agnes Yu HanIn Singapore, a dynamic multilingual and multicultural environment fosters interactions among diverse ethnic groups, facilitating the emergence of Code-switching, Code-mixing, and Polylanguaging. This study adopts Mufwene's model of The Ecology of Language Evolution to explore the external factors shaping individuals' language input systems, the feature pool of individuals, and the linguistic behaviours observed among student-teachers. The analysis reveals three key external forces: Singapore's linguistic context, the bilingual policy, and individuals' social circles and daily routines. These factors contribute to a rich feature pool for individuals, encompassing languages such as English, Chinese, Chinese dialects, and Malay. The linguistic output of student-teachers demonstrates the prevalence of code-mixing and code-switching, suggesting a widespread linguistic phenomenon in Singapore. The study also suggests using the term “Polylanguaging” to categorise these linguistic phenomena, as it is related to a broader ecological system. Moreover, it also highlights the “Polylanguaging” in Singapore being different from other countries as it is highly a subconscious act.59 167 - PublicationRestrictedGamification applied in Singapore primary school Chinese language teaching and learning: The use of ClassPoint Tool to enhance active learning through gamification(National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NIE NTU), Singapore, 2024)
;Teo, Germain Zi YanZhu, HaibinIn Singapore's educational landscape, where English predominates, Mandarin language instruction faces challenges due to student disengagement. This study explores the potential of ClassPoint, a Classroom Response System (CRS) with gamification features, to address these challenges. Gamification, integrating game elements into non-game contexts, has shown promise in enhancing student engagement and motivation. The study investigates how ClassPoint's gamified features can aid Primary School Chinese language teachers in managing classrooms and facilitating active learning. Through a literature review and analysis, the research delves into the effectiveness of gamification elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards in promoting active learning and improving classroom management. The study also examines using ClassPoint tools like interactive quizzes and presentation features to enhance student participation and facilitate effective classroom management. Findings suggest that ClassPoint's gamification features and effective classroom management strategies can create a conducive learning environment, fostering student engagement and motivation in Mandarin language learning. The study underscores the reciprocal relationship between classroom management and gamification, highlighting the potential synergy in promoting active learning. Overall, ClassPoint offers teachers a valuable toolset to address challenges in engaging students and managing classrooms effectively in Mandarin language instruction.86 192 - PublicationRestrictedSocial media comparison: Effectiveness of messaging in relation to framing and gender(National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NIE NTU), Singapore, 2024)
;Ramakrishnan Gowri ShankarThis research strived to find the effectiveness, also known as persuasiveness of messaging on the topic of social media comparison in relation to 2 key variables that are Gender (male/female) and framing (gain/loss). A zoom survey was conducted from a sample pool of 160 Singaporean undergraduates who are aged 21 years old and above. The results collected shows that effectiveness of messaging varies in relation to framing and gender to a notable degree. More specifically the perceived quality of the messaging varies among genders in relation to the type of framing. The result shows that males generally perceive the quality of either frame to be nearly the same while females generally perceive the quality loss frame messages more accurate than gain frame messages. Furthermore, males perceive gain frame messages as higher quality by a slight margin and females perceive loss frame messages as higher quality by a wide margin. Hence, these findings lead to a conclusion that the type of message framing impacts the perceived quality in terms of persuasiveness, notably among females.42 166 - PublicationRestrictedA progressive visual literacy framework to guide educators in appraising picture books for young readers(National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NIE NTU), Singapore, 2024)
;Yeow, Hana Qi YanFor my research, I focus on visual literacy in children’s picture books. As a child, I loved reading picture books, appreciating the visuals that gave refreshing vibrancy to the stories read. Today, with the vast diversity of children’s picture books, it is fascinating to explore the different types of visuals that children have always been especially attracted to. Picture books are not only appealing but also educational. It is impossible to deny the benefits they offer to young readers in kindergarten and primary school.
While I acknowledge that the interactions between visuals and texts in picture books are undeniably significant, this small research project is unable to accommodate a focus on both aspects, hence I have decided to focus mainly on the visual. As a future primary school English teacher, I am interested to explore visual literacy in children’s picture books in detail, in the hope that with the knowledge gained, I may be able to utilise these books better in my future teaching.

;Bak, Wai LengSince 2015, the introduction of the new syllabus, "Primary Chinese Language Curriculum Standards" (小学华文课程标准), has marked a notable development in Chinese language education in Singapore. With a focus on enhancing language proficiency among primary school students, the Ministry of Education (MOE) introduced this curriculum to set standards for teaching Chinese (2015: page 6). This initiative underscores the significance of language proficiency in the overall curriculum. Specifically, the "cultivating language abilities" (培养语言能力) was elevated to the primary goal in the 2007 curriculum standards and continued to be emphasized in the 2015 revision, highlighting its paramount importance in the Chinese language curriculum (Wang & Zhang, 2019).
The 2015 curriculum standards outlined specific outcomes, emphasizing the importance of students developing comprehensive language abilities, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Primary school students were expected to achieve goals such as understanding information from various sources, expressing personal thoughts clearly, independent reading, using common writing techniques, engaging in oral and written communication, and integrating language skills for effective interaction.
In light of the emphasis on spoken language skills in the revised curriculum, this research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of current teaching materials, with a specific focus on spoken vocabulary taught in the "HuanLeHuoBan" textbook. The study seeks to determine whether the materials aligned with the new syllabus adequately address the spoken vocabulary development needs of primary school students.

However, when students with special educational needs (SEN) attend mainstream schools, teachers struggle to cater to their needs as well as their typical developing pupils. This paper seeks to discuss inclusive strategies for the music classroom for students with ASD internationally and how they may be adapted for the Singapore classrooms as well as other factors these strategies are contingent upon for the full and successful integration of students with ASD in mainstream school music classes.

;Vimal, P.This literature review aims to assess whether Singapore is truly advanced in the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Physical Education (PE) through a comparison with the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). The review examines the extent of ICT integration, teachers’ perceptions, the tools, and methods used, and the support and training provided to PE teachers across these three countries. The findings reveal that while Singapore benefits from more centralized policies and comprehensive training programs for teachers, the actual adoption of ICT in PE remains limited, similar to what is seen in the UK and the US. This review highlights the need for Singapore to address gaps between policy and practice to increase the adoption of ICT in PE in the country.48 82
